Ductile Iron Grooved Fittings and Couplings

Our ductile iron grooved fittings and couplings are manufactured from ductile iron conforming to ASTM A536 Grade 65-45-12. This material provides a minimum tensile strength of 65,000 psi (448 MPa), yield strength of 45,000 psi (310 MPa), and elongation of 12%, delivering a strong and ductile solution for demanding piping applications.

Designed for fast and dependable installation, grooved couplings join prepared pipe ends using ductile iron housings, pressure-responsive rubber gaskets, and high-strength bolts and nuts. The system eliminates the need for welding, threading, or flanging, helping reduce installation time, labor, and overall project cost.

Our product range includes rigid and flexible couplings, reducing couplings, elbows, tees, crosses, reducers, end caps, mechanical tees, drain fittings, and flange adapters. Depending on the application, grooved joints can provide a rigid connection or accommodate controlled movement, vibration, thermal expansion, and minor pipe deflection.

These products are suitable for fire protection, HVAC, water, industrial, utility, and mechanical piping systems. Gasket compound, coating, pressure rating, dimensions, and approvals should be selected according to the service conditions and project specifications.

Typical Applications

ASTM A536 Grade 65-45-12 ductile iron grooved fittings and couplings are commonly used in:

• Fire-protection and sprinkler systems.

• HVAC and chilled-water piping.

• Water-supply and distribution systems.

• Pump rooms and mechanical rooms.

• Industrial process piping.

• Compressed-air systems.

• Drainage and utility piping.

• Applications requiring faster installation and easier maintenance.

Gasket Sealing System

The gasket is installed over the prepared pipe ends before the coupling housings are fitted. When the bolts and nuts are tightened, the gasket is compressed to form a tight seal around both pipes. Gasket material must be selected according to the conveyed fluid, operating temperature, pressure, and environmental conditions.

EPDM, nitrile, silicone, and other elastomer compounds may be available for different services. The correct gasket compound should always be confirmed before ordering, particularly for oil, fuel, chemical, high-temperature, potable-water, vacuum, or dry-pipe applications.

Why Grooved?

Grooved piping systems offer a faster, safer, and more economical alternative to traditional welded connections. Using ductile iron couplings and fittings, the system joins grooved pipe ends with a pressure-responsive gasket, housing segments, and high-strength bolts and nuts.

Because grooved connections require no welding, flame, or hot work, they help reduce installation hazards, site disruption, and labor requirements. They can also be installed faster than welded joints, helping contractors complete projects efficiently.

Grooved couplings are available in rigid and flexible designs. Rigid couplings provide a secure connection for straight pipe runs, while flexible couplings can accommodate controlled movement, vibration, thermal expansion, contraction, and minor deflection. The joints can also be disassembled easily, making maintenance, replacement, expansion, and future modifications more convenient.

Compared with welding, grooved systems offer easier installation, faster maintenance, and greater flexibility. They are widely used in fire-protection, HVAC, chilled-water, water, utility, and industrial piping systems. Product selection must be based on the required pressure rating, temperature range, pipe dimensions, gasket material, approvals, and applicable installation standards.

 What is Roll Grooving ?

Roll grooving is a cold-forming method used to prepare pipe ends for mechanical grooved couplings. The pipe is rotated between forming rolls, which displace the pipe wall inward to create a precise circumferential groove without removing material. This process provides fast, consistent pipe preparation while retaining more of the original pipe wall than cut grooving.

Before grooving, the pipe end must be square-cut, clean, free from dents and projections, and checked for weld seams or other surface irregularities. The correct roll set and depth setting must be selected for the pipe outside diameter and wall thickness. After forming, the groove must be inspected for uniform diameter, width, depth, and pipe-end condition before the coupling is installed.

All roll grooving should be carried out by trained personnel using approved equipment, calibrated inspection tools, and the groove dimensions specified by the coupling manufacturer.

General Pressure Rating for fire fighting applications

Our ASTM A536 Grade 65-45-12 ductile iron grooved couplings are available in pressure ratings commonly ranging from 300 psi to 500 psi, depending on the coupling type, size, pipe specification, groove profile, gasket material, and application. The final allowable working pressure must be confirmed from the product data sheet and shall not exceed the rating of the lowest-rated component in the piping assembly.

Pressure ratings are based on correct pipe preparation, compatible pipe dimensions, proper gasket selection, manufacturer-approved bolt tightening, adequate pipe support, and installation in accordance with the applicable product standard and manufacturer’s instructions.
